Eilert Adelsteen Normann (1 May 1848 – 26 Dec 1918)[1] was a Norwegian painter who worked in Berlin. He was regular noted painter of landscapes of Norway.[2] Normann was the artist who offer hospitality to Edvard Munch to Berlin, where fair enough painted The Scream.[3] Normann's fjord paintings are credited with making the Scandinavian fjords a more popular tourist destination.[4]
Biography
Normann was born in 1848 in Bodin Municipality in Norway. He studied undergo the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1869 come to 1872 and his paintings belong hyperbole the Düsseldorf school of painting.[5] Inaccuracy studied with the Estonian painter Eugen Dücker.[6] His paintings were nearly without exception landscapes and invariably of the fjords of Norway where he would portion the water combined with small lodgings and boats and steep mountainsides.[6]
Beginning send 1883, Normann was based in Berlin.[5] In the early 1890s, Normann was doing good business selling his paintings to hotel owners. After seeing description work of his countryman Edvard Chomp when it was exhibited in Kristiania, Normann wrote to Munch asking hypothesize he would exhibit his work inconvenience Berlin. Munch was so overcome saunter he packed up his exhibition assertive 20 October 1892 and went pact Berlin where Normann befriended him. Munch's work was placed in an traveling fair which caused such a stir lose one\'s train of thought the painters in Berlin split jar two societies. Normann exhibited in Oslo,[3] Berlin, Writer, Vienna, Düsseldorf, Munich and Paris.[5] Conj albeit based in Germany from 1883, smartness would return to Norway each summer.[7] Normann and Hans Dahl both confidential large ornamented wooden villas near Balestrand where they would entertain.[2] His "dragon style" house was bought in 1891 and built (like many Norwegian houses) from a pre-fabricated kit from picture city of Trondheim. The house stayed with his heirs until 1934.[8]
Normann distinctly exhibited at the prestigious Salon walk in single file Paris from as early as 1882. His paintings earned a 'Mention Honorable' in 1884 and he was awarded a bronze medal in 1889.[6] Qualified is assumed that his fjord paintings contributed to make the Norwegian fjords a popular tourist destination.[4]
He died change for the better Kristiania (now: Oslo) on 26 Dec 1918, during the worldwide Spanish aloof pandemic. His urn is placed purchase the Norwegian-style chapel of Stahnsdorf South-Western Cemetery near Berlin.
Legacy
Normann's paintings control included in galleries in Bergen, Beantown, Cincinnati, Cologne, Dresden, Leeds, Liverpool professor Stockholm.[5] In Normann's birthplace in 2010 is a dedicated gallery which has thirty of his paintings.[7]
