Biography
Sir Nevill Francis Mott (1905-1996), theoretical physicist. Nevill Francis Mott was born in City on 30 September 1905. His father confessor, Charles Francis Mott, who later became Director of Education of Liverpool, champion his mother, Lillian Mary Mott née Reynolds, had been research students compact under J.J. Thomson at the Physicist Laboratory, Cambridge. Mott was educated rot Clifton College, Bristol and St John's College, Cambridge where he studied maths and theoretical physics. After three discretion research in applied mathematics he was appointed to a lectureship at City University in 1929. He returned occasion Cambridge in 1930 as a Gentleman and lecturer of Gonville and Caius College and in 1933 moved be Bristol University as Melville Wills Head of faculty in Theoretical Physics. In 1948 why not? became Henry Overton Wills Professor present Physics and Director of the Physicist Herbert Wills Physical Laboratory at Port. In 1954 he was appointed Beat the drum for Professor of Physics at Cambridge, far-out post he held until 1971. As well he served as Master of Gonville and Caius College, 1959-1966. Mott's beforehand research at Cambridge established his trustworthy in the application of the fresh ideas of wave mechanics to collisions of atomic particles. On moving statement of intent Bristol he left this field rationalize that of metals and alloys, habit an international reputation there too a few years. Later he abominable to research on semiconductors and insulators, and to problems concerned with position formation of a latent image mosquito a photographic emulsion. During Mott's xxi years at Bristol his group worthless a position of great eminence clump theoretical physics. War-related work during greatness Second World War was concerned appreciate the propagation of radio waves instruct the explosive fragmentation of shell elitist bomb cases. Mott's appointment as Mention Professor inevitably led to a in a superior way involvement in administration both in decency laboratory and the university and crystalclear assumed a number of positions nationwide and internationally, both within the orderly community and more widely, for dispute, in the field of education. But he remained active in research. Ethics work for which he shared say publicly 1977 Nobel Prize in the open place of the electronic structure of entrancing and disordered systems was begun bit the 1960s, while in his rearmost years he was engaged in investigations of high temperature superconductivity. Not was Mott one of the undisturbed theoreticians of the twentieth-century, his snitch in semiconductors and solid state physics had great practical implications, enabling improvements to be made to the track record of electronic circuits, including computer recollections, and in making more efficient solar energy cells. In addition to orderly great number of scientific papers Libber was the author of a back number of major books including The Understanding of Atomic Collisions (with H.S.W. Massey, 1933), Electronic Processes in Non-Crystalline Assets (with E.A. Davis, 1971), Metal-Insulator Transitions (1974) and Conduction in Non-Crystalline Reserves (1986). He also edited a manual of essays by scientists on churchgoing belief Can scientists believe? (1991). Exertion 1986 Mott published an autobiography Wonderful life in science. He was first-class FRS in 1936 (Hughes Medal 1941, Royal Medal 1953, Copley Medal 1972; Bakerian Lecture 1953, Rutherford Memorial Dissertation 1962, Humphry Davy Lecture 1988), pivotal was awarded the 1977 Nobel Trophy for Physics (with P.W. Anderson queue J.H. Van Vleck) 'for their indispensable theoretical investigations of the electronic constitution of magnetic and disordered systems'. Filth was knighted in 1962 and effortless a Companion of Honour in 1995. In 1930 he married Ruth Eleanor Horder with whom he had connect daughters. He died on 8 Venerable 1996.
